GIHANA Overview
By Sheroline Eccles - Secretary (August 25, 2007)
In 2005 out of a casual conversation with a few past students, it was decided that a few of us would get together for a week-end of food, fun and frolic as we reflect on memories of our noble institution.
The response was so overwhelming that the decision was taken to establish a formal association. Out of that decision for the ensuing year, a steering committee was born with the following members:
Carlton Foster
Julius Record
Adan Hamilton
Sheroline Eccles
Ernie Lewin
Edgeton Wright
Charles Heron
Clover Malcolm
Hyacinth Shakes-Warren
Maudrie Black.
Paulette Sutherland
During the tenure of this committee, the adaptation of the By-laws and the registration of the association took place. Thus the association is registered in Florida as The Green Island High Alumni Association North American Inc.
This steering committee, aslo planned the activites for the following year which shifted to New York. Tthese activities included a formal dinner Saturday evening, during which we had an election of officers. The results effected an executive body comprising
Edgeton Wright - President
Carlton Foster - Vice President
Julius Record - Treasurer
Ernie Lewin - Asst. Treasurer
Sheroline Eccles - Secretary
Joan Hamilton-Caranza - Asst. Secretary
Winsome Hayes - Public Relations
Sidney Gooden - Asst. Public Relations
Mallie Heron - Board Member
Addan Hamilton - Board Member
Barbara McKenzie - Board Member
The following day activities were more of an informal nature and were staged in the park. The association is operating with the following objectives:
1. To seek means and ways of enhancing the learning environment
at the school.
2. To compliment efforts which address the advancement of the
student's social, spiritual and educational enrichment.
3. To nourish the social, psycological and spiritual character
of the
members of the association through group functions, social
activities, and meetings.
I am hoping that the association will grow progressively, the
objectives will be realized and the associaton can make a positive impact on
our noble Alma Mater.
